Spain won the 2026 World Cup with a goal scored six minutes into extra time, by a substitute, against ten men, in a final they had already spent two hours controlling without reward. The scoreline reads 1-0. The match itself read closer to 20-2.

Forty-eight teams, three host nations, 104 matches, thirty-nine days. The biggest World Cup ever staged ended in New Jersey on July 19th with Spain beating Argentina, and with a third-place playoff the day before that produced ten goals and no explanation. Everything below is the full record of it.

The final was a siege

Ferran Torres came on in the 62nd minute and scored in the 106th, seconds into the second period of extra time, reacting first when Nico Williams kept a ball alive at the back post. Argentina had not managed a shot on target all evening. They had not managed a shot of any kind in the first half.

Spain finished with 20 attempts to Argentina’s two. Only one World Cup final had ever been goalless after 90 minutes before this one, back in 1994, and for long stretches at MetLife it looked like this one would end the same way.

Emiliano Martínez is the reason it took so long. He set a record for saves in a World Cup final and spent most of the second half turning the game into a personal exhibition, including a full stretch dive to push away a Lamine Yamal free kick curling inside the far post. Argentina’s problem was that he was doing it on his own.

It turned three minutes into stoppage time at the end of normal time, when Enzo Fernández was shown a second yellow for a challenge that flipped Pau Cubarsí into the air. Argentina played all 30 minutes of extra time a man short. Spain, patient to the point of tedium for two hours, finally found the gap.

It is Spain’s second World Cup, sixteen years after the first. They went through the tournament unbeaten and conceded one goal in eight matches.

The semi-finals were not close

Spain beat France 2-0 without ever looking troubled. France had gone into the knockout rounds as the team the markets had winning it, holding the shortest price any side held all tournament, and they were second best from early on.

Argentina beat England 2-1 in the other. England led and then conceded twice, with Messi involved in the turnaround the way he had been involved in most things Argentina did well this summer. It was England’s second World Cup semi-final in three tournaments and their second defeat in one.

England 6 France 4 should not have happened

The third-place playoff in Miami was the highest scoring World Cup match since 1982 and the highest scoring third-place playoff ever staged. It was also, by a distance, the strangest.

England were 4-0 up at half time. Declan Rice, wearing the armband, curled one in from range inside three minutes and set up Ezri Konsa from a corner shortly after. Bukayo Saka scored twice before the break. Thomas Tuchel had left out Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Jordan Pickford, which looked like a white flag until it did not.

France then scored three times in the half hour after the restart. Kylian Mbappé got the first, set up Bradley Barcola for the second and scored the third himself. Saka completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot with three minutes left, Ousmane Dembélé pulled another back in stoppage time, and Bellingham settled it at the very end.

Third is England’s best World Cup finish since 1966. Bellingham’s goal was his seventh of the tournament, more than any England player has managed at a single World Cup.

The awards went almost entirely to Spain

Rodri took the Golden Ball as player of the tournament, ahead of Messi and Mbappé. Unai Simón took the Golden Glove with seven clean sheets, two more than any goalkeeper had managed at a single World Cup before. Pau Cubarsí, nineteen years old and playing centre back in a World Cup final, was named best young player.

The one that got away was the Golden Boot. Mbappé’s two goals in Miami took him to ten for the tournament, two clear of Messi, and it is his second Golden Boot in a row. Those same two goals moved him past Messi to 22 career World Cup goals, which is now the record.

No Brazil, no Germany, no hosts

For the first time, a World Cup quarter-final line-up contained neither Brazil nor Germany. Brazil went out to Norway in the round of 16, beaten 2-1 in New Jersey after Bruno Guimarães missed an early penalty and Haaland struck twice in the last ten minutes. It was the first time since 1990 that Brazil failed to reach a quarter-final.

All three host nations were gone inside four days of the same round. Morocco took Canada apart 3-0 in Houston. England ended Mexico’s tournament 3-2 at the Azteca with ten men for the last 35 minutes. Belgium dismantled the United States 4-1 in Seattle after a run that had the country properly interested.

Switzerland reached a quarter-final for the first time since 1954, having outlasted Colombia on penalties after 120 goalless minutes in Vancouver. Morocco reached one for the second tournament running.

Groups worth knowing about, and how they played out

Group I delivered exactly what was promised. France against Norway in round three turned into Dembélé's night rather than Mbappé against Haaland. Norway rotated heavily, accepted the loss, took second place and the softer bracket path, and rode it all the way to a first quarter-final in their history. France won the group with a perfect record.

Group J had Argentina and a resurgent Austria. Argentina won it at a canter. The 3-3 between Algeria and Austria on the final night sent both through and made for a frantic finish.

Group L had the England against Croatia rematch from the 2018 semi-final. England won 4-2 in round one, Croatia recovered and beat Ghana in round three to take second place on goal difference. England won the group and did not lose a match until the semi-final.

Group D had the United States on home soil and they delivered, right up until Turkey beat them 3-2 in a dead rubber in round three. The US had already qualified. The result meant nothing. They went through as group winners regardless.

Group E produced the result of the group stage. Ecuador beat Germany 2-1 in round three. Germany went through as runners-up and were knocked out on penalties by Paraguay a week later. Nothing about that sequence was expected.

The 2026 World Cup group stage in full

Round 1

The tournament opened on June 11 with Mexico beating South Africa 2-0 in Mexico City, the first World Cup goal on home soil for the hosts, and South Korea coming from behind to beat Czechia 2-1 in the same group. Canada drew 1-1 with Bosnia in Toronto for their first ever World Cup point. Switzerland and Qatar also drew 1-1. Brazil and Morocco played out a 1-1 draw that looked like a statement of intent from both sides. Scotland took care of Haiti 1-0.

The United States announced themselves with a 4-1 demolition of Paraguay. Australia beat Turkey 2-0. Germany did what Germany do in round one, thrashing Curaçao 7-1, though Curaçao, the smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup, gave the scoreline a veneer of respectability by pulling one back. Netherlands and Japan drew 2-2 in a game that had no right to be that open. Sweden put five past Tunisia without breaking a sweat.

Spain were held to a 0-0 draw by Cape Verde, the debutants' goalkeeper Volzinha making seven saves against a team who were 1200 to 1 underdogs. Saudi Arabia and Uruguay drew 1-1. Belgium and Egypt drew 1-1. Iran and New Zealand drew 2-2 amid considerable political noise off the pitch over a banner in Seattle.

France beat Senegal 3-1. Norway beat Iraq 4-1 with Haaland scoring twice. Argentina beat Algeria 3-0 with a Messi hat-trick, his second in World Cup history and the first time any player had scored a hat-trick in two separate tournaments. Austria beat Jordan 3-1. Portugal drew 1-1 with Congo DR. Colombia beat Uzbekistan 3-1. England beat Croatia 4-2. Ghana beat Panama 1-0.

Round 2

Mexico made it six points from six with a 1-0 win over South Korea, becoming the first team to qualify for the Round of 32. The United States followed 24 hours later with a 2-0 win over Australia. Canada produced one of the moments of the group stage, hammering Qatar 6-0, Jonathan David scoring a hat-trick, the first North American player to do so at a World Cup since 1930.

Germany beat Ivory Coast 2-1 in a game they were unconvincing in for long stretches. Netherlands put five past Sweden to go top of Group F. Japan beat Tunisia 4-0. Spain got back on track with a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia. Uruguay drew 2-2 with Cape Verde. Belgium drew 0-0 with Iran in Seattle. Egypt beat New Zealand 3-1 for a first ever World Cup win.

France beat Iraq 3-0. Norway beat Senegal 3-2. Argentina beat Austria 2-0, Messi scoring both to become the World Cup's all-time leading goalscorer, a record he held for another four weeks. Portugal hammered Uzbekistan 5-0. Colombia beat Congo DR 1-0. England drew 0-0 with Ghana in a flat game in Dallas. Croatia beat Panama 1-0. Switzerland beat Bosnia 4-1. Morocco beat Scotland 1-0. Brazil beat Haiti 3-0.

Round 3

Mexico wrapped up Group A with a 3-0 win over Czechia. South Africa beat South Korea 1-0 to take second place and send the Koreans out. Switzerland won Group B 2-1 against Canada. Bosnia beat Qatar 3-1 to reach their first ever knockout round. Brazil won Group C 3-0 against Scotland, and Morocco put four past Haiti to confirm both through.

The United States finished first in Group D despite losing 3-2 to Turkey in a game that was already decided. The 0-0 between Paraguay and Australia sent both into the third place race. Ecuador beat Germany 2-1 in Group E, the result of the group stage, while Ivory Coast beat Curaçao 2-0. In Group F, Netherlands won 3-1 against Tunisia and Japan's 1-1 draw with Sweden sent both through.

France won Group I beating Norway 4-1, Ousmane Dembélé scoring a first half hat-trick. Senegal hammered Iraq 5-0. Spain clinched Group H with a 1-0 win over Uruguay, and Cape Verde's 0-0 with Saudi Arabia sent the debutants through as runners-up. Belgium beat New Zealand 5-1. Groups J, K and L wrapped up on June 27. Argentina beat Jordan 3-1 with a rotated side. Algeria and Austria drew 3-3, both through. England beat Panama 2-0. Croatia beat Ghana 2-1 to finish second in Group L on goal difference. Colombia and Portugal drew 0-0 to confirm both through in Group K, and Congo DR beat Uzbekistan 3-1 to take the third place spot.

The 48-team format, judged on the evidence

Twelve groups of four, the top two through automatically, the eight best third-placed teams joining them, then a round of 32 bolted on the front of the knockouts. That was the new shape, and it is the part of the 2026 World Cup that will still be argued about in four years.

The complaint beforehand was that a bigger field would dilute the group stage, and it did. Plenty of group games were settled before they kicked off. The qualification maths for the best third-placed teams asked more of viewers than it gave back, and a fair number of teams reached the knockouts having beaten nobody.

The knockout rounds were a different tournament entirely. The round of 32 produced results a 32-team field would have priced out, Germany going out on penalties to Paraguay chief among them. The last eight was the least predictable in decades: no Brazil, no Germany, no hosts, and Switzerland in a quarter-final for the first time since Churchill was in office. Whether that trade is worth it depends on whether you watch a World Cup for the fortnight or for the month.

What to eat watching football

Five weeks of matches at unreasonable hours meant five weeks of needing something in front of a television, and the same problem arrives with every tournament, every cup final and most Sunday afternoons. This part does not expire.

Nachos. The undisputed answer for any group of people watching football together. Chips, melted cheese, jalapeños, sour cream, guacamole. Scales to any number and can be assembled at half time.

Chicken wings. Messy enough that you have to pay attention to eating them, which makes them a half time job rather than an in-play one. Buffalo or honey garlic. Make more than seems reasonable.

Sliders. Small burgers, several varieties, everyone takes what they want. Done in twenty minutes. Works for any match at any hour.

Loaded potato skins. Cheese, bacon, sour cream. Substantial without being heavy enough to put you to sleep in the second half, which matters for late kick-offs.

Toasted sandwiches. Fast, warm and satisfying at midnight. Cheese and ham is correct. Do not complicate this.

A bowl of good crisps. Sometimes that is enough. Buy the expensive ones. It was a World Cup. You were allowed.

Beer for evening matches, something lighter for daytime kick-offs. Avoid anything in a glass that tips easily, because sofas do not recover from that sort of thing and the timing is always wrong.

Next stop 2030

The centenary edition goes to Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with three opening matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. Spain will defend it at home. Messi will be 43. Mbappé will be 31 and still, on this evidence, the most reliable way anyone has found to score at a World Cup.
