What is BMI?

Body Mass Index is a simple calculation using your height and weight. It was developed in the 1830s by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet — not a doctor — which tells you something about its limitations.

What BMI doesn’t tell you

BMI doesn’t distinguish between muscle and fat, doesn’t account for age, sex, or ethnicity, and can misclassify athletes as overweight. Think of it as one data point, not a verdict.

Why it’s still useful

Despite its flaws, BMI remains a widely used screening tool because it’s fast, free, and gives a rough indication of weight-related health risk at a population level.

What to do with your result

If your BMI puts you in an unexpected category, talk to your GP before making any major changes. A number alone isn’t a diagnosis — it’s a starting point for a conversation.
